The Growing Popularity of Sprouts
Sprouts are the earliest stages of a plant’s growth cycle. They are ready for harvesting in as little as 3 days. They are most popularly eaten in sandwiches and salads, and can also be used as garnish or to complement any meal.
Sprouts have numerous health benefits. They contain more nutrients than full grown vegetables and aid in cancer prevention and digestion. A handful of broccoli sprouts, for example, contain many times more vitamins than a full plate of mature broccoli. Plus studies show their high concentration of sulforaphane can prevent AND kill cancer, inhibit fat absorption in the body, lower cholesterol, and contribute to numerous other physical and mental health benefits. Sprouts are truly superfoods.
More recently sprouts have been gaining popularity with added attention given to urban and hydroponic farming; however Miami based grower, Fullei Fresh, has been growing sprouts since 1978. They began with bean and soy sprouts. Now they grow almost 20 varieties, including alfalfa, beet, broccoli, clover, daikon, snow pea, sunflower, wheat grass, and original mixes such as Crunchy Mix, Garlic Sprout Blend, Rainbow Mix and Spicy.
All Fullei Fresh products are naturally grown without the use of pesticides, additives or preservatives. They are also non-GMO and pre-washed. The company is third party audited by NSF and certified organic by QCS. Although not all Fullei Fresh products are certified organic, they are all grown using organic methods.
To ensure they are safe to eat, Fullei Fresh tests every lot for e.coli and salmonella prior to shipping. They routinely test for listeria and use an ATP testing device after cleaning to ensure that proper cleaning procedures were followed.
In addition, Manny Wong, owner of Fullei Fresh, has the distinction of being one of two sprout growers involved in the formation of the Food and Drug Administration’s Sprout Safety Alliance (the others being members of academic and governmental organizations.) Mr. Wong is also a lead instructor for the Sprout Safety Alliance and teaches sprout growers and government regulators about proper, safe sprout growing procedures. Fullei Fresh was the first facility in the United States to be certified compliant with the new guidelines. They are at the forefront of the industry when it comes to food safety, innovation, quality and variety.
